About Us

What is ETAFIN?

ETAFIN is an independent non-profit research initiative to compile, analyse and disseminate information on a wide spectrum of developments which could pose a danger to Europe and humanity as a whole.

ETAFIN was born out of ETA Project, which was created in 2018 by a small group of young professionals based in Brussels, Belgium. This initiative stemmed from the realization that the current debates on threats at the European level do not seem to be able to keep up with the rapid changes on the continent and beyond.

Our team aims to gather perspectives from professionals and experts from a variety of different fields and backgrounds in order to produce a systematic and integrated approach to potential challenges Europe may face very soon.

Project aims

ETAFIN serves as a discussion and research platform. Our analysts review risks and threats focusing on Europe and those judged particularly dangerous will become the main focus of our attention.

1) Produce research focusing on the threat aspects of recent developments to Europe

2) Compile, review and analyse existing literature by experts across disciplines

3) Highlight less visible threats and show unconventional sides of known threats

4) Assess predicted impacts and suggested measures to address them

5) Provide actionable policy advice to European institutions, national, public and corporate actors

6) Develop strategic simulations on threats in order to research, train and educate

Project values

1) Foresight & future-oriented thinking

2) Rigorous, high quality research

3) Culture of constructive disagreement

4) Personal dedication and integrity

5) Interdisciplinary pooling of resources and perspectives

6) Engagement with experts and stakeholders

7) Independence from political debates or business interests

Reason

Key events of the past decade – rise of China, Russian annexation of Crimea, polarisation of politics and spread of COVID-19, came as a surprise to most of the world. We strive to avoid this in the future.

Mission

Our mission is to look at the bigger picture and do our best to find patterns which are likely to cause great harm, so that we can prevent it.

Vision

We work towards a world of better institutions, clearer foresight and forward thinking preparation for whatever dangers and opportunities await us.
